he 2022 Shibumi Knoll Cabernet Sauvignon is a highly acclaimed, low-production Napa Valley red from St. Helena, crafted by winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown. Known for its elegance and lush texture, this 100% Cabernet offers flavors of dark cherries, dates, and fig with a lasting finish. Producer Information
The business was founded by the late Don Ross, a former aerospace engineer, and is run today by his widow Joann Serafini. In 2003 they bought a small knoll of land 3.5 miles north of Saint Helena; within the two-acre (0.8ha) parcel was a tiny 0.75-acre (0.3ha) plot of Cabernet Sauvignon planted in 1996. The property also featured a vineyard cottage, guesthouse and winery. The first Shibumi Cabernet was that year's vintage, produced at nearby Benessere Winery. Shibumi Knoll is located on the alluvial fan of Mill Creek; soils are 80 percent rock. Thus the wine is described as combining the grace of valley floor Napa Valley Cabernet with the structure of stony hillside sites. Grapes are not picked overripe, to further emulate the best gravel-grown Bordeaux wines.
When the couple decided to make wine under their own label, they combined the topography of the property with a reference to a favourite book of both, the novel Shibumi by Trevanian. Shibumi is a Japanese word which translates roughly to "the pursuit of perfection through simplicity".
