A charming, unoaked white wine, Castel La Vie Blanc combines Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Gewürztraminer, where each grape variety makes a distinct contribution to the blend. The Chardonnay forms the foundation, imparting structure and balance to the wine. The Sauvignon Blanc introduces vibrant citrus and melon notes, while the Gewürztraminer enriches the blend with floral nuances and enhances its silky texture. Producer Information
Domaine du Castel is a small family-owned winery located in the Judean Hills near Jerusalem. It was first planted in 1988 and released its first Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot wines in 1992. It is regarded as one of the best producers in the country. Founder Eli Ben Zaken did not plan to produce more than this 1992 vintage. Just two barrels or 600 bottles were made, meant mainly for friends. But after positive feedback, more vineyards were planted and a winery built. Today more than 100,000 bottles per year are produced. About half of this is exported. Eli remains as winemaker alongside son Eytan. Daughter Ilana is in charge of exports and procurement, while another son Ariel, is CEO.
The estate covers 15 hectares (37 acres) of vineyard land in the Judaen Hills within a 4.5 kilometer (2.8 mile) radius of the winery. Soils are typically composed of well-draining clay and limestone, while altitude averages 750 meters (2,460ft). Cabernet Sauvignon is the most planted variety, covering just over a third of the vineyard, followed by Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Chardonnay. As well as estate vineyards, Domaine du Castel also takes fruit from contract vineyards which it directly supervises. The vineyards are worked by hand by a team of harvesters. Chardonnay for the estate's C Blanc du Castel wine is crushed but not destemmed, before fermentation in French oak barrels, one-third new. The wine is then aged sur lie with frequent batonnage for a year. Grapes for the red wines are destemmed and crushed, fermented in stainless steel, and then macerated for around three weeks. The wine is pressed, and then allowed to go through malolactic fermentation in barrel.
