Michters Distllery | Shenks Homestead | Kentucky Sour Mash Whiskey | 2025 Release Tasting Notes

Nose: The nose is earthy and rich, which heavy notes of dark brown sugar, vanilla, baking spice, light oak char, and a fair amount of fresh mint.

Palate: This whiskey presents with a sharp, peppery spice initially but the sweet/smoky notes of brûléed sugar quickly begin to develop, creating a nice balance of flavor. I also found oak char, more baking spice, some dark chocolate, and dried red fruit developing.

Finish: There is a somewhat thin mouthfeel but the finish is medium-long and pleasant. That peppery spice continues along with the same subtle smoky/sweetness, heavy cinnamon, more dark chocolate, some bitter orange peel, and very mild notes of that fresh mint from the nose.

Distillery Information

Michter's Distillery is a whiskey producer based in Louisville, Kentucky. It commenced trading in its current form in 2004, but counts its own history back to the 18th Century, when it was known as Shenk's (taking the name Michter's in the 1950s) and was based in Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania. The distillery makes a range of whiskeys, including a Kentucky straight Bourbon and rye, an American Whiskey (aged in used barrels, unlike Bourbon), and a sour mash whiskey based on the version made by the original Michter's. The range also includes a range of more premium whiskeys, including some up to 25 years old. There are also a number of limited editions that are some of the most sought-after and highest priced whiskeys made in the United States. Several bottlings use the Bomberger's brand (another former name). Michter's differs from many distilleries in putting its Rye and Bourbon into barrels at 103 proof (51.5 percent abv), rather than the typical level of 125. This is done in the belief that it helps the sugars in the toasted barrel wood to transfer to the spirit. In addition, the company raises the temperatures in its warehouses to increase evaporation during aging. All whiskeys are chill-filtered, with precise techniques and methods varying for each specific label.
